Why Your Drains Keep Clogging — and How Rooter Service Fixes It for Good
By Geovanny · Sigma Plumbing & Rooter

If you've snaked the same drain three times this year, the problem isn't the clog — it's what's causing the clog. Here's what's really going on, and why proper rooter service is what finally fixes it.
The 5 real reasons drains keep clogging
1. The clog never actually cleared
Store-bought drain snakes and chemicals punch a hole through the blockage. Water flows again — for a week. The clog wall is still there, ready to re-form. A proper rooter pulls the clog out and scours the pipe.
2. Tree roots in the main sewer line
The #1 cause of recurring clogs in older Norwalk, Whittier, Downey, and Long Beach neighborhoods. Roots find a hairline joint, grow inside, catch every piece of toilet paper that goes by, and the line clogs again every 60–90 days.
3. Grease build-up in the kitchen line
Cooking grease cools and coats the inside walls of the drain line like cholesterol in an artery. Hot water and dish soap don't remove it. Hydro-jetting does.
4. A belly in the line
A sagging section of pipe where waste pools instead of flowing. You can clear the clog ten times — it'll come back until the bellied section is replaced.
5. The line is the wrong size or pitch
Sometimes a remodel added fixtures to a drain that was never sized for them, or a previous repair left the line with the wrong slope. A camera inspection finds it in 20 minutes.
What rooter service actually does
A proper rooter visit is more than running a cable. It includes:
- Mechanical clearing with the right cutter head for what's in the line (roots vs. grease vs. solids).
- Camera inspection to confirm the line is actually clean and to find what caused the clog.
- Hydro-jetting when grease, sludge, or roots need to be scoured off the pipe walls.
- A maintenance plan so the line stays clean — usually annual jetting for homes with mature trees.
When to stop snaking and call a rooter pro
- You've snaked the same drain 2+ times in 6 months
- The clog comes back within 30 days of being cleared
- More than one fixture is slow at the same time
- You hear gurgling in a different fixture when one drains
- Sewage is backing up into a tub or shower
What it costs to fix it for good
A one-time mainline jetting in Norwalk runs $450–$900. A camera inspection adds $150–$300 and is often credited toward repair work. If we find a broken or bellied section, you'll get a written quote for spot repair or trenchless lining before any work starts. More on our drain cleaning service page.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between a plumber and a rooter service?+
Every licensed plumber can run a cable, but a true rooter pro has the heavy gear — cable machines with multiple cutter heads, hydro-jetters, and sewer cameras — to actually fix recurring clogs, not just clear them once.
How often should I get my main sewer line cleaned?+
Every 18–24 months for most Norwalk-area homes. Annual if you have mature trees or a known root issue.
Can I use Drano if my drain is clogging again?+
We don't recommend it. Repeated chemical use damages older galvanized and cast-iron piping common in LA County homes built before 1980 — and it almost never fixes the underlying cause.
Will rooter service damage my old pipes?+
Not when it's done right. We pick the cutter head and water pressure based on the pipe material — clay and old cast iron get a softer touch than modern ABS or PVC.
